Stations of the Cross – 10th Station

10th Station – Jesus meets his mother

We adore you O Christ and we praise you.

Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

St John’s Gospel 19:25-27

Reflection

St John’s Gospel tells us that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was present at Calvary. The meeting between Jesus and his mother on the road must have been painful and heart-breaking. The Station points out the embrace of Mother and Son as Mary tries to comfort her child. Now Mary must recall the prophecy of Simeon. “A sword shall pierce your very soul too”. Mary, at the Hour of the Cross, at the Hour of the world’s darkest night, you became Mother of the Church with courage and faith you did not waiver, you stayed with your Son. Help us to know your son through you. To Jesus through Mary.

Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, help us to follow you faithfully.
